The following review written by one of the Software Informer contributors applies to version 3.1
SPEEDbit Video Downloader installs as a browser extension to help you download video. In addition, it includes a standalone application, whose purpose is to convert the format of the downloaded files.
The program is very easy to use because it monitors any video that is displayed on your browser and offers to download it for you. Thus, it can automatically strip the real video URL. Moreover, the program has a browser toolbar that supports searching by keywords. Unfortunately, I could not find a way to start a new download by manually providing the program with a URL.

The built-in converter can help you re-encode the downloaded videos to other popular formats. Unfortunately, it has an unattractive interface and does not allow you to customize output profiles.

In general, it seems to me that SPEEDbit Video Downloader is no match for similar software. It could have certainly been a sensation some years ago, but now it is too limited and does not meet the needs of most users in relation to video downloading and converting.

  • It is easy to use.
  • It integrates with browsers.

  • You cannot enter URLs manually.
  • The converter's interface is unattractive.
  • Conversion profiles cannot be customized.

Firstly, I have no connection to Brother's Keeper (BK) or to its author John Steed. I began using BK5 some 15 years ago and upgraded to BK6 when it was issued.
Though eminently satisfied with BK, I have tried most of the other leading genealogy applications..."just to see", but have invariably fallen back on Brother's Keeper for its ease of use, EASY, INTUITIVE NAVIGATION!!!, pleasant user interface, comprehensive features, reliability, security... and the list goes on and on!
Also important is that BK's author, John Steed, continuously provides FREE product and features updates on a bi-weekly to monthly basis. So, great as Brother's Keeper was from the onset, it just continues to get EVEN better and better all the time!
Then there's the additional advantage with Brother's Keeper of EXCEPTIONAL support as well...
On the two occasions when I somehow inadvertently moved a BK file into a wrong folder on my computer, respectively added new hardware (an HP photo printer) whose driver conflicted with one small BK function, both times, John Steed (himself!) replied to my e-mails literally within minutes, providing instant fixes... And my high opinion of this 1st rate technical support doesn't stand alone; a simple Google search will reveal numerous genealogy forum posts from persons who've had exactly the same positive experience with BK/John Steed's support as I have!
Two final observations: While it's true that there's no specific Mac version of Brother's Keeper, BK apparently does run on newer Mac computers that have Windows application compatibility... Further, there IS an unlimited trial time free shareware version of BK that anyone can download at www.bkwin.com; and the number of features unavailable on the free version is incredibly small compared to the paid version. But, as was my case, at under $50, the full version of BK is one of genealogy's best bargains today!
